National-level Deepavali open house at KL Sentral today
KUALA LUMPUR: The national-level Deepavali Open House at the KL Sentral parking area from 11am to midnight today is expected to draw some 30,000 people. Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry deputy secretary-general Omar Abdul Rahman said the event is aimed at exposing the various cultures and descendants of the Indian community, like the Tamils, Malayalis and Telegus. "This will correct the misconception by some quarters that the Indians are all the same. The fact is that they came from various descendants and with their own cultures," he said. Traditional and popular Indian dishes will be served from 6pm to 8pm. The programme includes a drawing competition, cooking demonstrations of Indian cuisine, and a performance on the Indian art of self-defence. There will also be traditional dances and performances by artistes like Mawi, Datuk D. J. Dave, Sharmila as well as Frankie and Jerry. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak will arrive at 8pm. He will be greeted by 50 youngsters clad in Indian traditional costumes and carrying festive lamps. LRT and commuter services to KL Sentral will be extended to 1am. Jalan Tun Sambanthan will be closed from 3pm to midnight. Jalan Travers at the Jalan Bangsar traffic lights junction leading into Brickfields will also be closed from 6pm.
