Puchong residents fall for scratch-and-win scams
A NUMBER of residents in Puchong have fallen victim to scratch-and-win tricksters. Such scams are not new and have been repeatedly highlighted in the press, but the public continue to be tempted into parting with their money. According to a report in China Press yesterday, scratch-and-win contests are being used by salespersons to dupe unsuspecting people into parting with thousands of ringgit for cheap electrical goods. These con men have been especially active in Taman Kinrara, Taman Bukit Puchong, Saujana Puchong and Taman Puchong Intan in the last three months. They go door to door, telling potential victims that they have been picked to take part in scratch-and-win contests. Those who participate are invariably "rewarded" with coupons that allow them to purchase electrical goods purportedly worth more than RM5,000, for between RM2,000 and RM3,000. It is learnt that at least eight residents, most of them young people, were cheated of between a few hundred ringgit and RM5,000 each recently. The actual number of victims could be higher as many of them might choose to keep quiet to avoid being taken to task by their family members for their gullibility. MCA assemblyman for Puchong Dr Kow Cheong Wei told China Press he had recently received complaints from five victims of scratch-and-win scams. He said details provided by the victims indicated that the companies involved are based in other states. The daily said there were also salespersons promoting electrical products in the district, who although not offering scratch-andwin contests, dupe residents into buying products that are worth a fraction of the selling price. Customers later realise that the goods are of inferior quality. Many have complained to the companies involved but are told that the "salespersons are not around to verify their claims" or that "the matter is between the customer and the salesman and has nothing to do with the company".
