Survey: 40% of Malaysians have unprotected sex
PETALING JAYA: Almost four out of 10 Malaysians who responded to a worldwide survey admitted engaging in unprotected sex without knowing their partner's sexual history. Those aged between 16 and 24 are taking even greater risks, according to the Durex Global Sex Survey 2005. The results show that 61.2% of the respondents in that age range had unprotected sex despite being aware of the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. In response to this situation, Durex has donated RM10,000 to the Malaysian AIDS Foundation, the fundraising arm of the Malaysian AIDS Council. A total of 5,409 Malaysians, aged 16 to 55, took part in the survey. Another trend discovered by the survey is that Malaysians are starting to have sex earlier, with the average age for losing their virginity standing at 19, compared to 19.3 last year, and 20 in 2001. But by global standards, Malaysians are among the oldest to lose their virginity, on par with the Indonesians (19.1), Vietnamese (19.6) and Indians (19.8). Icelanders are the youngest to have sex at the age of 15.6. On average, Malaysians have sex 83 times a year, usually citing tiredness (32.6%) as a reason to avoid it. Although lower than the average global frequency of 103 times, Malaysians are by no means the least amorous. The Japanese do it only 45 times a year while Singaporeans do it 73 times. On the other end of the scale, the Greeks take the gold as the world's most frequent lovers with an average of 138 times a year, followed by the Croatians (134). And where are they choosing to have sex? Apart from the bedroom, people around the world are choosing to have sex in the car (50%). However, Malaysians seem to favour toilets (44%) over the car (38%). Of the 5,409 Malaysians who took part in the survey, 70% were male. Most were between 25-34 years of age (46%), followed by those aged 21-24 (26%), and those under 20 (15%). With the participants overwhelmingly male, it was no surprise that Malaysia voted Amber Chia as the sexiest local celebrity. Also for those planning romantic getaways, island resorts are a good idea (70% in favour), shopping malls are not (0.56% in favour). The Durex survey is now in its ninth year, with Malaysians taking part in it for the last seven years.
