Bachelor of Laws (LLB), University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur

The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree entitles its holder to be admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court after undergoing a period of pupillage. The LLB curriculum comprises both the academic as well as the professional component of legal training.

With effect from the 2006/2007 academic intake, a new LLB curriculum requires students to fulfil 156 credit hours within the minimum of 8 semesters before being awarded the Bachelor of Laws degree. These 156 credits are divided into four levels – the Preliminary level, the Intermediate levels I and II and the Final level. Among the subjects which are compulsory beginning with 2006/2007 intake include English, Project Paper and Family Law. Mooting is compulsory at the Intermediate I level while at the Intermediate II level, students have to undergo attachment.

The Final or Professional level places strong emphasis on practical legal training and comprises subjects such as Professional Practice, including ethics of the legal profession, Civil and Criminal Procedure and Evidence. The Faculty also conducts an Advocacy Course with the aid of Barristers from the UK to further enhance skills training. However, students may elect to exit at the end of Intermediate Level II after completing all the necessary academic subjects and graduate with a Bachelor of Jurisprudence (B. Jur) degree. With this degree students must pass the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) before they may be admitted as Advocates and Solicitors. Students of academic intake 2004/2005 onwards may not proceed to the Final or Professional level without having first completed the first three levels of the academic programme.

In the event that students do not complete the 4 year programme for Bachelor of Law, they may be awarded with the Bachelor of Jurisprudence (BJuris).
