Candidates pursuing the PhD in Science must develop an independent thinking approach and a unique expertise in their own research interest. Independent research requires diligent and thorough investigation into a topic with the aim of formulating new and original ideas, findings and theories.

All PhD students are required to attend the Research Methodology & Advance Research Methodology modules in their first year of candidature.

Taylor’s School of Biomedical Sciences offers a comprehensive curriculum taught by a faculty of highly qualified academics with years of experience in research. They actively publish work that has attracted successful grants and funding, as well as present research findings at both national and international conferences. In support of the high level of research, the School’s R&D labs are fully equipped with progressive research infrastructure and facilities.

The research of the School focuses on addressing and promoting the use of natural remedies in treating illnesses, such as cancer, neurological disorders and infectious diseases. Ultimately the research findings are characterising underlying mechanisms of the human health problems and providing new alternative natural products to improve health conditions. The environmental health issue is also one of the key research areas in particularly to develop mechanisms in saving energy resources and to use microbial pollutant indicator to monitor and detect the source of microbial contaminants in our water and food systems.

Entry Requirements

The minimum qualification for admission into the PhD in Engineering is a First Class Honours (H1) degree or Master’s degree in a related discipline, which should include a significant research component in the final year.

Equivalent course studies from a recognised tertiary institution may also be considered for admission.

Prospective students that are able to provide details of publications in refereed journals, conference abstracts and reports that demonstrate research proficiency will have an added advantage in gaining entry.

English Language Requirements

Prospective students must be able to meet one or more of the English language entry requirements listed below:

  • English is the first language
  • Successful completion of tertiary studies conducted entirely in English involving formal assessment of written work.
  • TOEFL – a minimum total score of 575 (paper-based) or 233 (computer-based) and a score of at least 5.0 in TWE (written English).
  • IELTS – an overall score of 6.5 and a score of at least 6.0 for each band score

Full documented evidence in support of English language requirements must be submitted with the PhD application form.

Programme Structure

A research degree involves a programme of active research with the normal duration of three years for full time or six years for part time.
