The special feature of this degree programme is the holistic and comprehensive approach adopted by Sunway University. Liberal arts and science courses are incorporated into the programme to provide students with a wholesome business education.

A wide range of business subjects is specially structured to provide students with regional and global perspectives of business management, enhance their leadership qualities and communication skills, and imbibe them with intellectual capacities, business and management acumen, and good values, ethics and governance. It also prepares students to manage business within and across borders.

The highlight of the programme is students are required to attend an internship programme to apply theory into the business world.

Students will be given 6-8 subjects exemptions from The Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (MAICSA)**.

As per Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) requirements, all Malaysian students must pass a module each in Malaysian Studies, Moral Studies (non-Muslims) / Islamic Studies (Muslims) and Bahasa Kebangsaan (exempted if a credit in Bahasa Malaysia has been obtained at SPM level).

University Compulsory Subjects

UCS 1000 Study Skills
The objective of this subject is to prepare students to be more organised and self-reliant in their learning by developing a set of specific skills necessary for successful study. Examples include listening and reading skills, effective note taking, efficient time management, independent research and maximise knowledge acquisition and critical thinking ability through collaborative learning (or learning through the exchange of ideas).

UCS 1001 English for Business and Management Studies
This subject is developed to enhance proficiency in general English by studying the communications skills, both verbal and written, which are needed in their business and management studies. It focuses on four aspects in the learning of English for business and management studies. The first is the study skills of listening effectively to lectures and class discussions, asking the right questions, taking notes both during lectures and reading, and reading for research. The second is skills related to academic writing – using appropriate tone and format, approach and referencing. The third is business writing. The fourth is the case method, a powerful tool for learning, but one from which only those familiar with the method will fully benefit.

UCS 2001 Communication Skills
The subject introduces the basic elements of oral communication, the various factors that determine effective communication and the application of communication skills in a variety of academic, business and social contexts. A variety of communication activities in presentation and discussion formats are incorporated to allow for understanding, practice and the mastering of basic concepts in communicating.

UCS 3001 Leadership
The focus is on the role of leadership in the context of corporate management and strategy. The theories of leadership, the characteristics and role of leadership, conflict management, change management and cross-cultural issues (e.g. the cultural values that affect perceptions of leadership and leadership styles) will be discussed.

Year 1

BAB 1104 Principles of Accounting
This subject explores the use of accounting information in the management and control of a business enterprise. The basic concepts underlying the recording of business transactions, the preparation and presentation of external financial reports and the ethical issues arising out of creative accounting practices are discussed in this subject. Issues regarding cost classification, inventory valuation, budgeting and performance evaluation, and techniques used in making both short-term as well as long-term strategic business decisions will be examined.

BMB 1202 Foundations of Business
The fundamentals of business practices, the economics applicable to these practices and current issues are the highlights of this subject. The subject is divided into three parts; from the definitions of concepts (business, profit, entrepreneurship – together with a brief history of the evolution), to the business organisation itself (how it is organised, different forms of organisation and organisational structures) and finally, the business environment in which a business operates (the dynamics of the industry and the macro-economy in which the government plays a major role constitutes the internal environment, the external environment is the international economy).

BMB 1203 Introductory Economics
This subject is about economic principles necessary for the study of business management. It is divided into two parts; microeconomics (the study of individuals, households and firms in decision-making) and macroeconomics (the study of economy-wide issues – like inflation, unemployment, economic growth, business cycles and international trade – affecting the economy as an aggregate, and the use of economic management tools). Each part follows a logical sequence from definitions of concepts to how they function in a given economic environment and, finally, how they interact.

BMB 1204 Principles and Practice of Management
This introductory subject provides an overview of management function (and the tasks that make up this function, i.e. planning, organising, leading, motivating, controlling) and its role in organisations, society and in the context of a changing environment. It lays out the principles and theories behind this function, i.e. the theory, and relates to how the principles are applied in today’s business environment, i.e. the practice. Ethics and social responsibility in business management will also be examined.

BAB 1205 Business Statistics
This subject is about statistical tools used for business analysis. It emphasises on probability theory and sampling techniques, hypothesis testing, regression analysis, statistical inferences, and the use of statistical software SPSS as a practical way of handling voluminous and/or complex estimation techniques.

BMB 1206 Business Computing
This role of information systems and their applications in today’s businesses, in areas of management such as supply chain management, production systems, distribution and marketing (the latest form of which being electronic commerce) are discussed in this subject. It also provides a high level, business-oriented view of hardware, software, databases and date communications.

BMB 1401 History and Philosophy of Science
This subject is designed to introduce the nature of science, the history of science, and the nature and history of the impact of science on human life and thoughts. It covers the broad nature and methodologies of science and their underpinning philosophies, and offers opportunities to learn about the people behind the discoveries, their cultures and the environment, to appreciate their findings and to see them in the context of their times. Eventually, efforts are made to develop analytical rigour in the evaluations of the major scientific methodologies and paradigms and present critiques logically and rationally.

BMB 1402 Life and Literature in a Changing World
This subject provides a range of contemporary literary texts to reinforce the critical study of the relationship between socioeconomic conditions and expressions of human emotions in literary works across cultures and time such as prose, poetry and drama. Textual analysis provides exposure to critical readings in understanding the expression of the human condition and cultural identity in literature. It explores and reinforces critical thinking and assesses the role of literature as a reflection of society’s concerns, hopes and aspirations.

Year 2

BMB 2201 Business Law
The subject introduces the development of the English legal system and its inception into Malaysian legal system. Basic concepts of the common law tradition, constitutional law, statutory enactments, the role of the judiciary, the Law of Contract, Tort, Agency and Partnership and Employment Law, and its implementation in the context of primarily Malaysian business will be discussed.

BMB 2202 Research Methods in Business
This subject provides the basic skills needed to undertake research and to write a research report or project paper. It covers each step of the research process, emphasises the significance of each step and the alternatives that can be deployed – from identifying a research topic to understanding their potential pitfalls, planning the research, executing this plan, processing and analysing, and finally, reporting the results with recommendations.

BMB 2203 Entrepreneurship
This subject covers the basic knowledge required to start a business, making use of the full range of entrepreneurship skills. It focuses on what entrepreneurs do, how they do it in different socio-cultural contexts, and what lessons can be learned from the experience of entrepreneurs. It discusses the skills for successful entrepreneurship, i.e. generating and developing ideas, seeking financing options, managing own businesses, preparing business and marketing plans to sell ideas and plans to potential partners, and minimising and managing internal and external risks associated with entrepreneurship.

BMB 2204 Managerial Economics
This subject provides a more quantitative approach to the understanding of the behaviour of economic agents in a business environment. It is tailored for business management where economic theories and principles will be integrated to analyse and solve real life problems in the business world and to make better business decisions. This branch of economics also integrates the principles with other managerial functions including accounting, finance, human resource management and marketing.

BMB 2205 Operations Management
This subject introduces the various elements that comprise the field of operations management. It provides the fundamental knowledge on the activities of the operations function and the basic concepts, techniques, methods and applications of operations management. Topics explored are the criteria for selecting site, layout and flow of operational facilities; operations management tools, such as forecasting, computation of break-even quantities, critical path analysis and linear programming; product and job design, planning and management of production capacity; supply chain and materials management, as well as quality management.

BMB 2206 Marketing Management
In this subject, efforts are made to provide a comprehensive perspective of marketing management, but within the framework of the many areas of operations within an organisation. The subject emphasises the inter-relationships of marketing concepts, decision-making, strategy, planning, and systems of control. It examines a broad range of issues, including environmental scanning (socio-cultural, economic, technological, political and legal aspects), ethical and global considerations that affect a company’s marketing efforts.

BMB 2207 Financial Management
The concepts, methods and tools used by financial managers in their attempts to make effective investment and finance decisions are introduced in this subject. It examines the corporate financial management context and the manner in which corporations are governed, and begins an exploration of the ways in which value is created and measured. Specific attention is devoted to: the financial management context; time value of money; risk and return, the cost of capital, and the valuation of stocks and bonds; capital budgeting; decision analysis tools; the impact of financial leverage on cost of capital and valuation; and an overview of financial statement analysis.

BMB 2208 Human Resource Management
This subject paints a broad picture of what HRM involves, i.e., the key concepts, practices and issues of human resource management in organisations (from HR planning and job design, to recruitment, performance monitoring and evaluation). It will critically examine what are the principles of sound HRM, how employee performance can be measured, and how this performance can be improved. In addition, it addresses real work examples and also, the various approaches to the management of employees and how these will impact the organisation’s success and well-being of its employees.

BMB 2209 Quantitative Business Analysis
This subject introduces the various quantitative techniques that are useful for effective business decision-making. It focuses on fostering statistical thinking, emphasising interpretation of results, forecasting and problem solving using quantitative analysis. Discussion on probability and decision theory, techniques like regression analysis and time series modeling, linear programming, models like transportation and assignment models, inventory control models, queuing models, analytical methods like critical path analysis and PERT, and computer simulation as a tool with numerous applications, are dealt with.

BMB 2401 Scientific Ideas and Innovations
This subject provides an overview of the emergence of scientific ideas and its role and innovations in the development of modern society. Topics discussed include basic principles of science in relation to the environment, the emergence of scientific ideas and how they lead to technological innovations, the trends in the evolution of scientific ideas and their application towards modern innovations and technological advancements, and the impact of scientific advancements on environment and society.

BMB 2402 Political Economy of Southeast Asia and East Asia
The dynamism of the political economy of Southeast and East Asia, with particular emphasis on Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines is the focus of this subject. It emphasises Southeast and East Asia’s diversity of historical and political experiences (ideology, personality and the role of the state in development) as well as strategies, i.e. the growth strategies or models adopted as part of its diverse processes of economic transformation in the region. The subject will also cover the economic growth and subsequent economic crisis of East Asia, namely, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The developmental role of regional and international trade organisations is also examined to assess their impact on the political economy of countries in Southeast Asia and East Asia.

Year 3

BMB 3201 Contemporary Regional Issues
This subject examines contemporary regional issues which range from politics to economics and socio-cultural. These forces constantly interact, and are themselves affected by influences and developments outside the region, to produce the regional dynamics that make up Southeast Asia today. This subject also introduces theories and models of development and their relevance to the region, examining the role of governance, corruption, the environment and intellectual property in the development debate, and explores selected developmental issues of a contemporary nature, for example, ethnic conflicts, globalisation and security threats

BMB 3202 Business Ethics and Social Responsibility
The subject addresses the social responsibility of businesses beyond simply enhancing their profits. It provides a comprehensive coverage of the theoretical as well as application issues in business and professional ethics. The focus will be on the variety of ethical issues including the normative theories of ethics, ethics and ethical dilemma in business, professions, the workplace and the environmental, and model of ethical decision making.

BMB 3203 New Business Development
This subject focuses on how an organisation can make use of innovation and its resources and capabilities to adapt to or capitalise on new business opportunities in order to maintain competitiveness and achieve growth. A multitude of business knowledge areas such as marketing, business strategy and entrepreneurship are tapped into to create an extended approach to understanding new business development.

BMB 3204 Business Strategy
The aim of this subject is to provide a critical and creative analysis of organisations, and implementation of corporate business planning. It explores the existence of strategy for each area of business, from choosing an industry to compete in and positioning the company favourably within industry context to the abilities to execute top-level decision throughout an organisation. The subject will also highlight the importance of developing business strategy within the framework of organisational culture, and in accordance with sound corporate ethics and governance, and in an international context in light of globalisation that has an impact on an organisation’s competitiveness.

BMB 3205 Business and Community Project
The subject provides opportunity for students to relate theories and knowledge gained from business studies to be put to practice in organisations in the business sector and the community. Experiential learning is provided through seminars given by business and community leaders. Student involvement in an organisation leads to a research project pertaining to organisational policies or problems.

BMB 3206 Internship
The internship programme provides opportunity for experiential learning, that is, translating classroom knowledge to the real world. It enables students to apply their knowledge and deploy their skills in identifying, defining, and analysing business and management issues in the organisations that they have been attached to. Apart from gaining knowledge and experience in ‘real-world’ work situations, they also make career contacts and references.

BMB 3207 Managing Change
This subject deals with the inevitability of changes in the business environment. It explores the process of change, or change management, and shows how companies and their management need to respond to such change, manage the change, motivate and maintain the change. It is therefore important to understand the concept of change, instruments for change, types of and strategies for change, and organisational development (OD) and some OD techniques as tools in change management. To complement organisational change, vision and a learning culture are also important attributes in an organisation.

BMB 3208 Introduction to International Business
This subject provides an overview of the challenges facing internationalising organisations. It looks at what strategies and forms of operations these firms could employ and functional issues they face as part of their internationalisation process. It addresses too the implications of differences in social processes, cultural and political environments, organisational structures, management practices, and communications on decision-making in organisations engaging in international business.
