The BSc (Hons) Business Studies is a business course specially designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the various challenges faced by different aspects of a business in the global environment.

The Honours Degree in Business Studies aims to produce graduates with a comprehensive knowledge of various fields of business such as accounting, finance, economics, marketing and management so that they are sufficiently equipped to contribute to the effectiveness and efficiency of a business organisation. All students are required to undertake a six-credit independent study known as Research Project during the third year of study.

Students will be given 6-8 subjects exemptions from The Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (MAICSA)**.

University Compulsory Subjects

UCS 1000 Study Skills
The objective of this subject is to prepare students to be more organised and self-reliant in their learning by developing a set of specific skills necessary for successful study. Examples include listening and reading skills, effective note taking, efficient time management, independent research and maximise knowledge acquisition and critical thinking ability through collaborative learning (or learning through the exchange of ideas).

UCS 1001 English for Business and Management Studies
This subject is developed to enhance proficiency in general English by studying the communications skills, both verbal and written, which are needed in their business and management studies. It focuses on four aspects in the learning of English for business and management studies. The first is the study skills of listening effectively to lectures and class discussions, asking the right questions, taking notes both during lectures and reading, and reading for research. The second is skills related to academic writing – using appropriate tone and format, approach and referencing. The third is business writing. The fourth is the case method, a powerful tool for learning, but one from which only those familiar with the method will fully benefit.

UCS 2001 Communication Skills
The subject introduces the basic elements of oral communication, the various factors that determine effective communication and the application of communication skills in a variety of academic, business and social contexts. A variety of communication activities in presentation and discussion formats are incorporated to allow for understanding, practice and the mastering of basic concepts in communicating.

UCS 3001 Leadership
The focus is on the role of leadership in the context of corporate management and strategy. The theories of leadership, the characteristics and role of leadership, conflict management, change management and cross-cultural issues (e.g. the cultural values that affect perceptions of leadership and leadership styles) will be discussed.

Year 1

BAB 1105 Business Statistics
This subject is about statistical tools used for business analysis. It emphasises on probability theory and sampling techniques, hypothesis testing, regression analysis, statistical inferences, and the use of statistical software SPSS as a practical way of handling voluminous and/or complex estimation techniques.

BMB 1102 Computer Applications in Business
This subject introduces basic computer concepts including the more practical features of Office XP and multimedia such as word processing, spreadsheets, professional presentations (PowerPoint), databases, graphics software, internet e-mail and World Wide Web access. Its overall objective is to help students to understand the basic use of computers, learn data processing and gathering skills, write reports and prepare presentations.

BMB 1204 Principles and Practice of Management
This introductory subject provides an overview of management function (and the tasks that make up this function, i.e. planning, organising, leading, motivating, controlling) and its role in organisations, society and in the context of a changing environment. It lays out the principles and theories behind this function, i.e. the theory, and relates to how the principles are applied in today’s business environment, i.e. the practice. Ethics and social responsibility in business management will also be examined.

BMB 1207 Principles of Microeconomics
The basic concepts, theories and principles underlying economic decisions and the impact of those decisions on surrounding environment at the micro-level are introduced in this subject. Price determination as a result of changes in market forces and government’s policies, consumer and production theories, the various market structures and their effects on consumers’ and producers’ economic choices, the role of government in the market and in addressing social inefficiencies are topics covered in this subject.

BMB 1208 Principles of Macroeconomics
This subject introduces the macroeconomic environment; the four sectors which will form the economy and how each of these sectors can contribute to or hinder the economic growth of a country. It addresses the macroeconomic objectives of an economy and problems faced, such as unemployment, inflation and slow economic growth, and introduces tools and methods to measure and analyse those problems (e.g. aggregate income determination) with possible solutions or policies to be implemented including monetary, fiscal, trade and exchange rate policies.

BMB 1209 Principles of Marketing
This subject provides an overview of marketing concepts, processes and decision making. It addresses key issues in marketing such as identifying customer needs and wants, identifying target markets, examining the marketing mix, methods of conducting marketing research and developing and formulating marketing strategies. It also introduces new approaches to marketing such as ethical marketing, globalisation and Marketing Information Systems.

BMB 1210 Organisational Behaviour
This subject concerns the behaviour of people in organisation. It provides a comprehensive coverage of the theories and concepts as well as application issues in the field of Organisational Behaviour. It focuses on the impact of behaviour at three levels; the individual, the group level and at the organisational level. The importance of studying organisational behaviour is to enhance organisational culture, strategy, leadership, conflict resolution and change, and the efficient usage of resources.

BMB 1211 Principles of Financial Accounting
This is an introduction to the principles of financial accounting. It examines the techniques used to prepare year-end published financial accounts, including the relevant accounting standards and the interpretation of financial accounts for performance evaluation. This subject also looks into the various accounting standards applied at different economic events of an organisation. Ethical issues in accounting and the consequences of creative accounting practices will also be discussed.

BMB 2201 Business Law
The subject introduces the development of the English legal system and its inception into Malaysian legal system. Basic concepts of the common law tradition, constitutional law, statutory enactments, the role of the judiciary, the Law of Contract, Tort, Agency and Partnership and Employment Law, and its implementation in the context of primarily Malaysian business will be discussed.

Year 2

BMB 2202 Research Methods in Business
This subject provides the basic skills needed to undertake research and to write a research report or project paper. It covers each step of the research process, emphasises the significance of each step and the alternatives that can be deployed – from identifying a research topic to understanding their potential pitfalls, planning the research, executing this plan, processing and analysing, and finally, reporting the results with recommendations.

BMB 2203 Entrepreneurship
This subject covers the basic knowledge required to start a business, making use of the full range of entrepreneurship skills. It focuses on what entrepreneurs do, how they do it in different socio-cultural contexts, and what lessons can be learned from the experience of entrepreneurs. It discusses the skills for successful entrepreneurship, i.e. generating and developing ideas, seeking financing options, managing own businesses, preparing business and marketing plans to sell ideas and plans to potential partners, and minimising and managing internal and external risks associated with entrepreneurship.

BMB 2205 Operations Management
This subject introduces the various elements that comprise the field of operations management. It provides the fundamental knowledge on the activities of the operations function and the basic concepts, techniques, methods and applications of operations management. Topics explored are the criteria for selecting site, layout and flow of operational facilities; operations management tools, such as forecasting, computation of break-even quantities, critical path analysis and linear programming; product and job design, planning and management of production capacity; supply chain and materials management, as well as quality management.

BMB 2206 Marketing Management
In this subject, efforts are made to provide a comprehensive perspective of marketing management, but within the framework of the many areas of operations within an organisation. The subject emphasises the inter-relationships of marketing concepts, decision-making, strategy, planning, and systems of control. It examines a broad range of issues, including environmental scanning (socio-cultural, economic, technological, political and legal aspects), ethical and global considerations that affect a company’s marketing efforts.

BMB 2207 Financial Management
The concepts, methods and tools used by financial managers in their attempts to make effective investment and finance decisions are introduced in this subject. It examines the corporate financial management context and the manner in which corporations are governed, and begins an exploration of the ways in which value is created and measured. Specific attention is devoted to: the financial management context; time value of money; risk and return, the cost of capital, and the valuation of stocks and bonds; capital budgeting; decision analysis tools; the impact of financial leverage on cost of capital and valuation; and an overview of financial statement analysis.

BMB 2208 Human Resource Management
This subject paints a broad picture of what HRM involves, i.e., the key concepts, practices and issues of human resource management in organisations (from HR planning and job design, to recruitment, performance monitoring and evaluation). It will critically examine what are the principles of sound HRM, how employee performance can be measured, and how this performance can be improved. In addition, it addresses real work examples and also, the various approaches to the management of employees and how these will impact the organisation’s success and well-being of its employees.

BMB 2209 Quantitative Business Analysis
This subject introduces the various quantitative techniques that are useful for effective business decision-making. It focuses on fostering statistical thinking, emphasising interpretation of results, forecasting and problem solving using quantitative analysis. Discussion on probability and decision theory, techniques like regression analysis and time series modeling, linear programming, models like transportation and assignment models, inventory control models, queuing models, analytical methods like critical path analysis and PERT, and computer simulation as a tool with numerous applications, are dealt with.

BMB 2210 Consumer Behaviour
This subject introduces consumer behaviour and the various behavioural concepts and theories that will help in the understanding of consumer behaviour. It examines individuals, groups, organisations, and other indirect forces (internal and external) that help shape consumer behaviour and how it affects marketing decisions. The topics covered include perception, personality, attitudes, and cross-cultural and global issues that affect consumer behaviour and marketing.

BMB 2211 Quantitative Methods for Decision-Making
The major quantitative techniques for analysing information applicable to various spheres of business activity like production, marketing quality management, inventory control and numerous others are discussed in this subject. It also focuses on fostering statistical thinking, emphasising interpretation of results and problem solving, in addition to the methods used. Topics covered are hypothesis testing, probabilistic statistics, causal and other relationships, forecasting using time series models and regression techniques, linear programming models, network models and the use of CPA for decision-making.

BMB 2301 Information System for Business
This subject examines how organisations design, manage and use information systems and technology as important corporate resources. This examination occurs in the context of critical and analytical evaluation of the concepts, principles, processes, techniques and issues of modern computerised business information systems. It also examines the roles of information systems in a modern organisation. Topics covered in this subject include an introduction to how management of information is important to businesses, the various components of information systems, the types of information systems utilised in modern businesses, system development processes, information systems administration and management, and the social implications of information systems.

BMB 2302 Cost and Management Accounting
This is an introductory subject to cost and management accounting. Its focus is on the use of accounting information in business decisions pertaining to production cost, information for decision-making and planning and control. The contents of this subject is divided to three parts; the first addresses the decision-making process and an awareness of the users of accounting information, the second covers the principles involved in accumulation, classification, summarisation and reporting information for profit measurement and the third part is on measuring and identifying those costs which are relevant for different types of decision-making.

Year 3

BMB 3202 Business Ethics and Social Responsibility
The subject addresses the social responsibility of businesses beyond simply enhancing their profits. It provides a comprehensive coverage of the theoretical as well as application issues in business and professional ethics. The focus will be on the variety of ethical issues including the normative theories of ethics, ethics and ethical dilemma in business, professions, the workplace and the environmental, and model of ethical decision making.

BMB 3208 Introduction to International Business
This subject provides an overview of the challenges facing internationalising organisations. It looks at what strategies and forms of operations these firms could employ and functional issues they face as part of their internationalisation process. It addresses too the implications of differences in social processes, cultural and political environments, organisational structures, management practices, and communications on decision-making in organisations engaging in international business.

BMB 3209 Research Project
The objective of the research project is to expose students to the real business environment (taking into consideration ethics and legalities) where their knowledge and skills are used to identify, define, and analyse problems related to a specific area of research before findings of the research are to be presented. Research is conducted in a systematic manner in major areas of business – management, marketing, accounting, finance, and information technology.

BMB 3301 Electronic Commerce
Overall, the subject explores the concepts of E-Commerce, various components of E-Commerce, its different forms, technological advancements in E-Commerce in keeping with its relevancy to the real world and the application of E-Commerce techniques to reshape trade in a number of sectors, for example, in creating many new logistics and service issues. It also addresses the issues that surround online-businesses and how these issues affect business decisions and strategies.

BMB 3302 Strategic Management
This subject relates to the art and science of formulating, implementing and evaluating strategies that enable an organisation to achieve its objectives. Strategic management models and concepts; analysing, assessing and choosing between strategic alternatives – taking into consideration the organisation’s external environment; identifying its internal capabilities, such as the financial, human resource, culture and systems, which affect the implementation of strategies, and ethical considerations are discussed. Apart from the private sector, the subject will also look into the strategic management of the public sector and non-profit organisations.

BMB 3303 International Marketing
International Marketing in the context of the domestic market expansion concept, the multi-domestic market concept and the global marketing concept are the themes of this subject. It discusses how organisations can use a variety of marketing strategies and tools that will help it succeed in the international marketplace. It examines the ideas of using adaptive marketing strategies versus using standardised marketing strategies in making international marketing decisions. Topics include Global Trading Environment, International Marketing Research, International Branding, Exporting and Logistics and adapting the Marketing Mix for international marketing.

BMB 3304 International Economics
This subject provides an overview of how the international economy works, specifically, the key parts of the international economy and the role each part plays, and the forces that determine the flow of commodities, services and capital throughout the world. It also deals with the theory of international trade, commercial policy, exchange rate determination and foreign exchange markets, and balance of payments and their adjustments.
