Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical), Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia

The Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering currently offers Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) for undergraduate students. This program is conducted over 8 semesters within a four year period. There are a few of specialized areas offered by the department include Environmental Engineering and Biochemical Engineering.

The programme is fully accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) and gets a certificated from Board of Engineers Malaysia. The program is evaluated every 5 years by the Engineering Accreditation Council in order to recognize the compatibility of the curriculum. Some of the accreditation from EAC is assessed by the professors from top universities in every year.

This department also obtains a certification of ISO 9001:2000 in each operation that related with teaching and learning. The concept of Outcome Based Education (OBE) is introduced by the department as a main approach in teaching and learning process.

Programme outcomes (PO) are attributes that are expected to be attained by the students when they complete their degree programme. The PO for the Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) programme have been formulated to address the stated programme objectives and the requirements by the accreditation bodies. After series of meeting and workshops, the department agreed to invoke a set of measurable outcomes to achieve the PEO. These outcomes spread across three main domains: cognitive/knowledge (K), psychomotor skill (S) and affective/attitude (A), are perceived to be a comprehensive development of graduates capabilities in displaying expected skills and knowledge to reflect their readiness to become chemical engineers.

The objectives of the Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) Programme are:

  • To provide graduates with sufficient knowledge in Chemical Engineering field and the necessary skills and attitudes to work in the industrial sector.
  • To produce graduates who are creative and innovative, as well as sensitive and responsible towards society, culture and environment.
  • To produce graduates who are able to accommodate with global working environment as well as to continue life long learning and research in Chemical Engineering field.
  • To produce graduates with knowledge and ability in problem solving and design latest process equipment in either one of each specific field of Chemical Engineering

Bachelor of Chemical Engineering Curriculum

The curriculum and Programme Structure of the Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) program is designed to provide graduates with sufficient knowledge and skills in the field of chemical engineering in a period of 4 years (8 semesters). A minimum of 140 total credit hours are required for graduation, including a 5 credit hour practical training and a 6 credit hour final year project. Students can specialize in one of the four options: process engineering, material science and engineering, biochemical engineering and environmental engineering.

Basic sciences, mathematics and computing are studied in depth with emphasis on the engineering applications. Practical skills in design, development and tests are acquired in laboratory sessions and computer-aided-design exercises. Students are expected to acquire skills in the development and analysis of process flowsheets, and are able to appreciate the integration of economy, social, safety and environmental issues in which the chemical industry operates.

Students are required to undergo 10 weeks industrial training in private firms or government agencies during their sixth semester holidays. The training provides students first hand experiences in real engineering problems.

In addition to the final year project, the students are also required to work in a group to complete an intensive plant design project, in which they need to integrate all they chemical engineering knowledge acquired during the programme.

Career Opportunities

Graduates work in diverse areas encompassing the chemical, biochemical, biomedical and pharmaceuticals industries; computer-aided process and control engineering; the energy sector; environmental protection, management, and safety; natural resource utilisation; food processing; advanced materials manufacture; the minerals industry; education; research and development; management and consulting and in related government organization. Among of the fresh graduates is successfully obtain a scholarship to continue their further study especially at top universities such as University of Cambridge, UK and National University of Singapore.
