Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta – Government Hospital in Perak
Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta is the first and largest Psychiatric Institution of 4 Institutions in Malaysia. In 1910, with the selection of sites proposed by Dr. Samuels. Meanwhile, the government built a hospital called the “Federal Lunatic Asylum”. Construction was completed in 1911 and Dr. W.F. Samuels was appointed the first Medical Superintendent.
In the early stages of the development of the “Federal Lunatic Asylum” was a psychiatric foundation consisting of 3 male wards and a female ward separated by kitchen space. In 1928 the “Federal Lunatic Asylum” was renamed the “Central Mental Hospital” and in the early 70s the name was changed to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta to display a more positive image of the development of psychiatric treatment. Today, Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta is the largest Psychiatric Foundation out of four foundations in Malaysia. It is located near Tanjung Rambutan town, 16 km to the northeast of Ipoh City.
The original area of Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta was 544 acres of which 300 acres were used to erect various buildings and the rest were used for rehabilitation activities such as agriculture, livestock and fisheries. However, in 2007 a total of 41 acres were handed over for the Ulu Kinta Associate College of Health Sciences.
Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta is now the largest Psychiatric Foundation in Malaysia and in 2011 Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta was 100 years old. During that time, many achievements, successes and awards were received. Hopefully in the future the excellence will continue to prosper in this hospital.

The hospital has 78 wards consisting of 53 male wards and 25 female wards. The number of official beds has been reduced from 2,200 beds to 1,800 in 2016. This is due to the expansion in the implementation of psychiatric care services in the community.
