AIMST University is registered with the Ministry of Higher Education, Government of Malaysia, as a tertiary educational institute under Sections 38 and 39 of the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act of 1996. It formally began its operations on 30 October 2001, coinciding with its registration with the Department of Private Education under the Ministry of Higher Education.

Imbued with the vision of its founders, AIMST aims to be a premier private sector university in the country and region catering to the needs of local and international students in providing quality technical education at an affordable price. The curricula for most of the degree programmes are drawn from the University of Bristol in the U.K.

Most components of the degree programmes include computer training, writing and research in order to prepare students for work and to provide them with the ability to apply technologies to all aspects of their education. Admission to the degree programmes requires the applicant to meet minimally the prescribed grades in the relevant subjects at the matriculation (local or overseas) level or possess other equivalent qualifications acceptable to AIMST University.

The medium of instruction for all courses is English, although the importance of the National Language will be emphasised in all activities of the University. AIMST University will provide language support for students before and during their degree studies to ensure an acceptable level of fluency.

AIMST University Campus

AIMST University pledges to provide the best array of services and facilities to meet the discerning needs of our students. We have a range of specialist services ready to help and support them during their time with us. Our Student Affairs Officers will assist students in making arrangements for accommodation, transportation and even help organise extracurricular activities for them. We also have available a team of professionally trained Student Counsellors who are ever willing to assist students in handling any personal difficulties or problems. Students who require financial assistance may also contact the Student Affairs Division.

Diligent Security Officers help to ensure the safety of our students while healthcare needs can be met at the Student Health Clinic. Above all these, we have a strong team of support staff to ensure efficient and up-to-date learning facilities such as computer laboratories and a fast-growing library of books, journals and other resources for information retrieval. Our International Office is a one-stop centre catering to enquiries from international students, as AIMST University opens its door to students from the region and the rest of the world. With the services and facilities provided, we hope to create a cosy home-away-from-home environment for all our students and to provide the right atmosphere so that they can experience a lively, exciting and productive university life.

AIMST University Facilities

AIMST is fully equipped with a full range of modern lifestyle as well as sports & recreational facilities for the comfort and convenience of our students. These encompass a state-of-the-art library, cafeteria, healthcare and IT facilities and specially designated prayer rooms for Muslim staff and students.

Library
Upon enrolment at the University, you automatically become a library member. The AIMST library is designed to be a state-of-the-art Learning Centre, complete with high-speed Internet access, network points for laptops and specialist services for users.

Cafeteria
The AIMST cafeteria caters to the University’s staff and students, serving a variety of tasty vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, with a diverse menu selection that includes local and western cuisine.

Sports & Recreation
At AIMST University, we place utmost importance on students’ participation in extracurricular activities and student organisations. Our current student organisations include the AIMST Matriculation Students’ Association (AMSA), AIMST Degree Students’ Association (ADSA), AIMST Counselling Club, AIMST Football Club and AIMST Basketball Club. Students are always welcome register new organisations by contacting the Student Affairs Division.

Sports & recreational facilities available on campus include:

Hostel
Hostel accommodation is provided for all students, whether local, out-of-town or overseas students. These residences are shared by groups of four to eight students and are within walking distance to the Student Centre that contains shops, a cafeteria, bank and post office.

The University’s accommodation package includes three meals a day at the cafeteria and bus transportation to and from the University.

Healthcare
The AIMST University Student Health Clinic is dedicated to provide routine medical care as well as emergency treatments to staff and students. A token charge is levied for this service at the start of each academic year.

Computer Facilities
AIMST University’s ultra-modern campus is home to the best, cutting-edge computing and communication infrastructure and technologies to cater to the University community. We have also built two state-of-the-art laboratories that house high-end equipment that are provided especially for students to use for their projects and researches.

Tums (Total University Management System)
The University also comprises a fully integrated TUMS with customised modules that include a student/staff portal, the ILMU Library Management System, Financial Suite, Human Resource Suite and University Management Suite.

Faculties and Schools in AIMST University

Faculty of Medicine
The Faculty of Medicine is committed to excellence in educating tomorrow’s healthcare professionals and biomedical researchers through the recruitment and retention of outstanding teaching and research faculty and the establishment of state-of-the-art facilities.

It offers an innovative and clinically integrated curriculum that meets the needs of our local, national and global communities. The programme is spread over five years and leads to the MBBS degree. The Faculty has, through an MoU with the Ministry of Health, Government of Malaysia, access to five teaching hospitals and twelve rural health clinics in the State in running its medical programme.

Faculty of Dentistry
The five-year BDS programme is a professional course to educate and train students to become dental practitioners. Dentistry is the second health science programme to be introduced at AIMST. The course uses a modern approach to dental education based on the best educational practices in dental schools in Malaysia and overseas. The BDS degree will conform to international standards. A highly professional faculty with strong research base, and fully conversant with the needs of students to be a professional workforce, has been hand-picked to deliver the BDS programme.

Dentistry is a challenging and rewarding career dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of oral and dental disease. Dentists contribute to society by caring for individual patients and by promoting oral health in the community. Dentists enjoy the daily challenge of working with people, using their scientific knowledge, modern techniques and advanced equipment to solve the clinical problems of their patients. Most dentists have regular working hours in a comfortable environment and receive a good stable income. Dentists often work closely with their medical colleagues to provide the best care for patients with medical problems.

Faculty of Pharmacy
The Faculty has set its goal to produce graduates well versed in the fundamentals of the practice of pharmacy. The Faculty also instills into the students attitudes and values central to their profession, namely, respect for cultural and religious diversity, adherence to ethical standards, compassion in handling patients and their families, and avoidance of pecuniary self interest when it comes to optimizing patient care.

The Faculty of Pharmacy offers a 4-year BPharm (Hons) degree programme.

Faculty of Allied Health Professions (FAHP)
The Faculty of Allied Health Professions was established in 2008. Currently, the Faculty has 2 schools under its care.

Initially these two schools were under the School of Allied Health Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science. However, due to the increasing demand of the allied health courses and its intense academic activities, AIMST University has restructured some of the existing faculties, following which the Faculty of Allied Health Professions was formed to oversee the specific allied health science courses in AIMST University.

The first intake for the Diploma in Physiotherapy was in April 2007. Due to popular demand the school has increased its intakes to three per year. The School of Nursing began its first intake for the Diploma in Nursing in September 2008. Currently there are 102 enrolled per this program.

Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS)
The Faculty has two departments, the Department of Biotechnology and the Department of Materials Science. Each department offers its own three-year degree programme with honours i.e. BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology (BT) and BSc (Hons) in Materials Technology with Management (MTM). An MSc in Biotechnology (by research) is also available.

Staff in the Faculty include not only highly experienced academics, but also well-trained younger staff, who have been recruited from various local and overseas universities as well as industry. The teaching and research programmes also draw upon expertise from other Faculties, especially the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering & Computer Technology. In turn, FAS staff offer their services to other Faculties. Senior staff continue to maintain active research links with their previous institutions.

High-end computing facilities, which are essential to quality study and breakthrough scientific research, are well supported both at the University and at the departmental level. Some postgraduate specialist centres or laboratories are in place (e.g. the molecular biology and orchid tissue culture laboratories) while others are in the pipeline, such as a Bioinformatics Centre, a Photonics Laboratory and an Advanced Molecular Biology Laboratory.

Faculty of Engineering and Computer Technology (FECT)
The Faculty of Engineering and Computer Technology (FECT) at AIMST University offers unique opportunities for frontiering, innovative education and research. The Electrical and Electronics Engineering programmes are approved by the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia, and are designed according to the specifications set by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and Quality Assured by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

Similarly the Information Technology (IT) programmes are fully accreditated by MQA.

The programmes offer curricula that combine a strong theoretical background with hands-on experience in excellent labs, and focus on teamwork and communication skills. The building infrastructure is created in a manner which is conducive for the learning process. Currently FECT is pioneering research in the core areas of RF/Microwave engineering, IT and nanotechnology.

The faculty has laid plans for establishing eminence in key areas of RF/ Microwave engineering, communications, signal and image processing, information technology infrastructure ( database, storage, networks, and security), machine learning, human-computer interface, graphics and visualization, optoelectronics and photonic systems, remote sensing and environmental technology, software engineering, global services management and engineering, VLSI and nanosystems including bionanomaterials, nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS).

Faculty of Business and Management
The faculty currently offers both Diploma and Undergraduate programs:

  • Diploma in Business Management
  • Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Management Information Systems
  • Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Finance & Management
  • Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Business & Marketing

These courses have been designed to meet the requirements of the work place in a variety of organizations and to equip students with the knowledge, skills and experience needed in order to cope with the particular challenges and creatively theirs.

Other planned programmes include Accountancy, Risk Analysis & Management and Business & Management.

All the degree programmes equip students for a wide choice of careers in business.

The three degree programmes share a common first year.

The curriculum includes computer applications, communication skills, leadership qualities, development of creative and analytical thinking as vital themes. After their first year of study, students specialize in selected majors in their second and third years. Students are also required to conduct practical research on selected topics.

Group and project work are actively encouraged, building upon interactions with local industry and the needs of rural business. The programme balances academic knowledge with vocational skills, while developing awareness of current issues and developments. A variety of optional subjects enables students to pursue their particular areas of interest.

Compulsory industrial training postings at the end of the second year are conducted for all the three degree programmes aimed at giving the students early exposure to the real work environment.

School of General & Foundation Studies
The School is steadfast in its commitment to develop autonomous learners who are both mature and responsible. The three Foundation Programs equip the students with adequate subject knowledge and learning skills to confidently meet the demands and challenges of degree studies. To ensure a high quality program, the Center has an advisory panel comprising of selected faculty members and external experts to assist in its curriculum development and the formal assessment of its courses viz. English, Mathematics and the Sciences. The emphasis on the use of English as the medium of instruction aims to produce students who are confident and fluent in the language and, therefore, ready for the challenges of globalization.

The School of General & Foundation Studies is committed to the holistic development of its students. We strive to help our students achieve academic excellence in a stress-free environment. There is constant support for our students from the administration and academic staff in both academic and non-academic matters. The close staff-student rapport is established through the mentor-mentee system, which is an integral part of the student support system at AIMST University. The intensive tutorial system ensures close monitoring of students’ progress. There is a wide array of services and facilities to support the learning process; these range from academic-related services to recreational activities. Besides that, getting to know other fellow students who are of different cultures and ethnicity is definitely an experience to look forward to.
