Originally known as Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraa Utara Malaysia (KUKUM), or Northern Malaysia University College of Engineering, it was renamed as Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) in February 2007. The first intake consisted of 116 engineering students who started classes on June 2002. Currently, UniMAP has approximately 13,488 students and a workforce of more than 2,193 academic and non-academic staff members. We also offers six Diploma in Engineering programmes and 39 postgraduate programmes that lead to Masters and PhD degrees.

UniMAP graduates are nurtured to become competent practitioners in their area of specialization and to have the confidence to explore entrepreneurial possibilities upon graduation. They are expected to not only exhibit excellence in the knowledge and skills that are directly related to their specialized fields of study, but also to demonstrate outstanding proficiency in both communication and ICT skills, as well as possess unsurpassed traits of professionalism and patriotism.

Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP)Most of the engineering programmes at UniMAP have an electronic-based focus. However, both basic and applied studies on other fields of engineering and technology that support the advancement of engineering are also actively pursued here. In addition, International Business, Engineering Entrepreneurship and an MBA in Engineering Management are also on offer. The International Business programme is designed to produce global-business leaders who could function and compete effectively in the globalized market place. The Engineering Entrepreneursip programme aims to equip today’s generation of ‘technopreneurs’ with an excellent entrepreneurial knowledge on managing industrial and technology-based businesses, whilst the MBA in Engineering Management is designed to produce competent managers for the engineering and technology sectors.

Postgraduate Programmes
Apart from undergraduate studies, we also offer extensive postgraduate study options – both by research and by coursework (mixed mode)

By Research
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – traditional route to PhD.

Split PhD – whereby students who are enrolled in UniMAP’s partner universities can spend some time here to fulfil UniMAP’s requirements, and then be conferred a double degree one from the student’s original university, and another from UniMAP.

Master of Science (M.Sc) – traditional route to MSc by research

Industrial PhD – whereby students spend most of their time in the industry, typically solving industry problems, and then write a thesis based on the industry project.

PhD by publication – whereby students engage in projects that enable them to produce quality research papers published in eminent journals. A collection of these papers that fulfil university requirements enable a PhD to be granted.

MSc/PhD – whereby students sign up for MSc with a view of converting to PhD later. If the student’s work is deemed of sufficient quality, she/he can be upgraded to be a PhD candidate, hence speeding up her/his time for a doctorate. On the other hand, if the quality of work is found to have not reached a PhD-convertible level, the student is awarded an MSc.
