Datuk Roger Tan Memorial Scholarship – Eligibility, Amount, Application

The Datuk Roger Tan Memorial Scholarship has been established by ECM Libra Foundation in honour of Datuk Roger K H Tan who served as a member of the Board of Trustees of ECM Libra Foundation since its inception in 2004. Datuk Roger attended the London School of Economics, graduating with a Bachelors of Law (LLB, 1971) degree. During his studies at the LSE, Datuk Roger was the recipient of the Hughes-Parry Law Prize for academic excellence. Please note that this scholarship is for London School of Economics and Political Science’s students only.

Upon his graduation from the LSE, Datuk Roger went on to qualify as a Barrister-at-Law from Gray’s Inn, United Kingdom prior to embarking upon a legal career. Datuk Roger joined the Malaysian chapter of the international law firm, Allen & Gledhill, where he rapidly distinguished himself, culminating in his naming as a partner of the law firm at age 29. He was the youngest associate in the history of Allen & Gledhill Malaysia to be so honoured. Datuk Roger left legal practice in 1976 to join the fledgling Hong Leong Group of Malaysia, where he was instrumental in the Group’s transformation and growth into one of Malaysia’s leading multinational companies during his 28 year tenure. Prior to his retirement in 2004, Datuk Roger last held the post of President and CEO of Hong Leong Credit, and was also a director on the various boards of flagship Hong Leong Group companies. He was by then a highly respected figure within the Malaysian corporate circles.

Datuk Roger Tan Memorial ScholarshipNot content with his considerable achievements in the legal and corporate fields, the late Datuk Roger dedicated himself to charitable causes during his retirement and became well-known as a philanthropist. He generously championed and dedicated his energy to many causes caring for the less fortunate, notably being appointed President of the Malaysian Leprosy Relief Association, which provides care for leprosy patients and their dependants. He also supported numerous other charitable causes, typically in an anonymous fashion or with minimal fanfare. The infectious passion with which he applied himself to these charitable causes influenced many, from corporate titans to ordinary laymen, to also support these causes in whatever way they could. In the process, Datuk Roger earned many lifetime friends from all walks of life.

The scholarship is intended to keep his memory alive by continuing his charitable work.

The scholarship, funded up to RM4 million, aims to provide full/partial scholarships for Malaysian LSE students needing financial assistance, be they prospective or existing students, with the objective of assisting them to pursue their undergraduate studies at the LSE.

Note: There will be no bonding conditions for the scholarship.
