The Diploma in Business Administration is a foundation business programme designed to give students broad coverage in all aspects of business. The aim is to promote an advanced and efficient administration and management in industry, commerce and public service through continued study and practice.

It is a cost-effective provision of quality education leading to awards which are valued in their own right, and are also recognised as an accepted route into the later stages of a university or professional programme.

Graduates of this programme will be given 6 subject exemptions from The Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (MAICSA)**.

As per Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) requirements, all Malaysian students must pass a module each in Malaysian Studies, Moral Studies (non-Muslims) / Islamic Studies (Muslims) and Bahasa Kebangsaan (exempted if a credit in Bahasa Malaysia has been obtained at SPM level.

Modules

BACT 0101 Financial Accounting I
This subject provides basic knowledge of financial accounting principles and procedures associated with the recording of business transactions and the preparation and presentation of financial statements.

BCOM 0101 Business Communications
This subject covers the theories of communication, the different business correspondences such as business letters, memos, e-mails and business reports, and the different media communications including electronic communication and oral presentation.

BECO 0101 Microeconomics
This subject focuses on the empirical and theoretical microeconomics concepts, and issues that impact businesses and industries. The issues discussed relates to how individual units determine the pattern of production and distribution of goods and services such as the spending decisions of households, production decisions of business firms, determinants of market demand and supply, different market structures and behaviour of firms in these different structures, theory of distribution and the basic concepts of welfare economics.

BITC 0101 Computer Applications
This subject introduces a range of business computing applications (using Windows operating systems) such as word-processing, spreadsheets, powerpoint and the Internet, to perform tasks like report writing, business analysis (using spreadsheet), business presentation and web page development (using HTML code). This provides an overall understanding of information technology, multimedia presentation and webpage creation.

BITC 0102 Information Technology I
This subject provides an overall knowledge in managing information systems for an organisation. It introduces the techniques to identify, implement and manage information systems strategically to increase the organisation competitiveness.

BLAG 0101 Business English I
This skill-based subject covers the foundational language skills, reading, listening, speaking and writing – required for academic purposes and in practical business situations. It also covers relevant study skills for effective students’ participation in an academic setting.

BLAG 0102 Business English II
This is a follow-up to Business English I but with greater emphasis on the learning of writing and speaking skills in realistic business situations. It also helps to develop analytical and critical skills.

BLAW 0101 Introduction to Law
This subject introduces the English and Malaysian court system and the alternatives available to a businessman in disputing settlements. It covers in depth the Law of Contract which includes the formation of an agreement, vitiating factors discharge of contracts and remedies of contract, and the Law of Tort.

BMGT 0101 Introduction to Business
An overview of the practices of businesses in an organisation is presented in this subject. The objectives of a business, different types of business systems and their respective functions – accounting, marketing, production, finance and human resource management, and internal and external business environment affecting the overall organisation, will be covered.

BMGT 0102 Management
This subject focuses on management theories and principles, business concepts, structure of management functions and skills, management process and tools for effective management and decision-making. There will be opportunities to apply management understanding (theories and principles) to problems in organisations.

BSTA 0101 Quantitative Methods I
This subject provides the basic use of quantitative methods in business decision-making. It focuses on the methods to organise, interpret, analyse and present business data. Essential concepts in theory of probability and probability distribution, and the application of these concepts to practical examples and fundamental decision-making techniques are also addressed.

BACT 0202 Financial Accounting II
This subject covers the nature and basic elements of a company accounts, the preparation of financial reports and the interpretation of consolidated balance sheet with the aim of developing skills to construct and appraise corporate financial statements.

BACT 0203 Cost Accounting
The basic techniques used in determining the costs of a product or service for an organisation, and the interpretation of cost information to assist management in planning, appraising, controlling and decision-making will be introduced in this subject.

BECO 0202 Macroeconomics
The theories, concepts and issues revolving around the major macroeconomic objectives of an economy – unemployment, inflation and economic growth and external balance are discussed here. It introduces the various factors and policies that have an impact on the growth and well-being of an economy and its people. Current macroeconomic issues such as globalisation, regional interdependence and the economic problems of developing countries will be discussed.

BITC 0203 Information Technology II
The various types of information systems used by organisation and the use of information systems to support decision-making are introduced in this subject. It provides the concepts to determine and apply a coherent approach to business analysis, including the identification of the current business situation. This will enable a detailed support systems change to be prepared and the use of appropriate tools to support business analysis.

BITC 0204 Electronic Commerce
The essential elements in electronic commerce and its implications upon the business environment specifically, to customers and organisations in aspects such as the security of business transactions, privacy of personal information, protection of intellectual property and emergence of new forms of business intermediaries, are addressed in this subject. It also introduces E-commerce theories, E-commerce models and its application in supply chain management.

BLAG 0203 Academic Research Skills
This subject introduces academic research methods (quantitative and qualitative methods) and research process, from planning (research proposal) to executing research and finally, report writing.

BLAG 0204 Critical and Creative Thinking Skills
This subject is designed to introduce basic concepts in critical, creative and logical thinking skills, as well as to develop students’ communicative competence. The subject also introduces the various methods to approach problems.

BLAW 0202 Business Law
This subject provides a broad knowledge of the principles relating to Commercial Law and the Law of Partnership. It introduces the underlying principles of agency, sales and supply of goods and consumer credit. The terms and conditions pertaining to contract of employment – the employees and employers responsibilities in business organisation, will be examined.

BMGT 0203 Organisational Behaviour
This subject focuses on the impact of behaviour at three levels; the individual, the group and organisational level, and the impact of these behaviours on the organisational culture and climate. It explores the individual emotions and behaviours, team dynamics, and the systems and structures within and around organisations.

BMKT 0201 Fundamentals of Marketing
This is a foundation subject in Marketing that provides an overview of marketing concepts, processes and decisionmaking. It focuses on the core areas of marketing: identifying customer satisfaction, buyers’ behaviours, target markets and the marketing mix elements. It also introduces the various tools of the marketeer (and their strengths and weaknesses) in analysing, developing and formulating marketing strategies, marketing environment forces and their effects on marketing decisions, and the issues relating to social responsibility and irresponsible marketing (ethics).

BMKT 0202 Marketing Research
This subject addresses the nature and scope of marketing research, qualitative and quantitative techniques in marketing research and its role in designing and implementing successful marketing programmes, ethical aspects of marketing research and international dimension and complexity in international marketing research.

BSTA 0202 Quantitative Methods II
This subject is a follow-up to Quantitative Method I. It focuses on the application of statistics to the business environment such as inference statistics and forecasting technique using the regression method to interpret and analyse data for the purpose of forecasting, marketing research, production decisions, planning and decision-making.

BACT 0304 Financial Management
This subject presents the basic fundamentals of finance management from the introduction of the financial system, financial objective of a firm, methods used in financing, investment and dividend decisions, to the influence of the environment on those financial decisions. This subject also develops an understanding of the techniques used in managing a firm’s working capital, and the theoretical and practical factors affecting dividend decision.

BMGT 0304 Human Resource Management
This subject examines the principles and practices of human resource management, that is the productive use of people in achieving the strategic business objectives and the satisfaction of individual employee needs, with special reference to the Malaysian context in terms of selection, recruitment, compensation, benefits and training, appraisal, and industrial relations. It also addresses the impact of change in the global economy and business practices on the human resource manager’s roles.

BMKT 0303 Marketing Communications
In this subject, marketing communications, promotional practices and models, guidelines to choose and use appropriate promotional elements to meet marketing objectives, and the formulation of an integrated marketing communication strategy and plan, will be discussed.

Entry Requirements

Academic Requirements:

  • SPM, O-Level, UEC or equivalent
  • Pass SPM / O-Level / UEC with minimum three (3) credits (inclusive of English and Mathematics); or
  • Pass SPM / O-Level / UEC with minimum three (3) credits, with at least a pass in both English and Mathematics.*

*Students are required to pass with credits in the English and Mathematics enrichment classes arranged by the School.
