The Doctor of Philosophy programme also requires students to complete several academic courses and conduct an independent research project. A Doctor of Philosophy programme candidate may complete the course in a minimum period of 2 years and a maximum period of 5 years.

Admission Requirements

Applicants should have obtained a Master’s degree recognized by UPM in forestry or related fields. Those with a Bachelor’s degree with CGPA of 3.75 and above or equivalent to a first class degree honors may also apply for direct advice of his Advisor/Thesis Supervisory Committee.

Programme Requirements

Courses
Students are required to register for a minimum of twelve (12) credits and up to a maximum of thirty six (36) credits of coursework relevant to his field of study. The courses a student should register for must be on the advice of his Advisor/Thesis Supervisory Committee.

Comprehensive Examination
Students pursuing a doctoral programme must pass a written and oral comprehensive examination, which should be taken only after completion of all coursework, required for the programme, and within 5 semesters of cumulative enrollment. It is designed to evaluate the student’s knowledge in the area of study, his ability to integrate knowledge of research and theories pertaining to issues that are fundamental to the field of study and his understanding or relevant research methodology and designs.

Seminar
Students are required to register for SPS 6903 seminar. This 1-credit seminar course is meant for students to prepare and orally present their research proposal, and should be taken, at the latest, by the third semester of their programme. The course will be graded on a Satisfactory/Non-Satisfactory basis.

Thesis
A Doctor of Philosophy candidate is required to register for SPS 6999 phD Research. This is a research project whereby at the end of the study period the candidate will submit a thesis. The thesis will be examined and a viva voce conducted to determine the student’s competency in the field of study.
